Hostwolf MCP server

@hostwolf/mcp lets AI assistants manage your Hostwolf game servers. It works with Claude, Cursor, VS Code and any other client that supports the Model Context Protocol. Ask things like:

  • "Why did my Minecraft server crash last night?"
  • "Install EssentialsX and restart."
  • "Back up Valheim, then switch it to the public test branch."
  • "Ban the player called griefer123 and tell everyone why."
  • "Restart every server at 4 am daily."

Setup#

  1. Create an API key at panel.hostwolf.net/account/api.
  2. Connect your client. You can use the hosted server at https://game.hostwolf.net/mcp (nothing to install), or run it yourself from the download (needs Node.js 18+).

Hosted: https://game.hostwolf.net/mcp#

Nothing to install, and always the latest version. Your client sends your key with each request; we never store it.

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http hostwolf https://game.hostwolf.net/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer ptlc_your_key"

Claude Desktop

Claude Desktop runs local servers only, so it connects to the hosted one through mcp-remote. Add this to claude_desktop_config.json (Settings → Developer → Edit config):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hostwolf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://game.hostwolf.net/mcp", "--header", "Authorization:${AUTH_HEADER}"],
      "env": { "AUTH_HEADER": "Bearer ptlc_your_key" }
    }
  }
}

Cursor

Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or to .cursor/mcp.json in a project:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hostwolf": {
      "url": "https://game.hostwolf.net/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ptlc_your_key" }
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Add this to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "hostwolf": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://game.hostwolf.net/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ptlc_your_key" }
    }
  }
}

Options go on the URL: https://game.hostwolf.net/mcp?readonly=1 exposes only read tools, and ?servers=1a2b3c4d,5e6f7a8b limits the assistant to those servers. If your key is restricted to certain IP addresses, also allow 208.85.21.93, the hosted server's address.

Run it yourself#

The same server as a download. It runs on your computer, so your key never leaves it.

Claude Code

claude mcp add hostwolf -e HOSTWOLF_API_KEY=ptlc_your_key -- npx -y https://game.hostwolf.net/dl/hostwolf-mcp-0.1.6.tgz

Claude Desktop

Add this to claude_desktop_config.json (Settings → Developer → Edit config):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hostwolf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "https://game.hostwolf.net/dl/hostwolf-mcp-0.1.6.tgz"],
      "env": { "HOSTWOLF_API_KEY": "ptlc_your_key" }
    }
  }
}

Cursor

Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or to .cursor/mcp.json in a project:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hostwolf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "https://game.hostwolf.net/dl/hostwolf-mcp-0.1.6.tgz"],
      "env": { "HOSTWOLF_API_KEY": "ptlc_your_key" }
    }
  }
}

VS Code

Add this to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "hostwolf": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "https://game.hostwolf.net/dl/hostwolf-mcp-0.1.6.tgz"],
      "env": { "HOSTWOLF_API_KEY": "ptlc_your_key" }
    }
  }
}

Settings#

For the self-run server; the hosted one takes ?readonly=1 and ?servers= on its URL instead.

VariableMeaning
HOSTWOLF_API_KEYRequired. Your client API key (ptlc_...).
HOSTWOLF_READONLY1 to expose only tools that read, never change anything.
HOSTWOLF_SERVERSComma-separated server ids to allow; all others are hidden.
HOSTWOLF_BASE_URLPanel URL (default https://panel.hostwolf.net).
HOSTWOLF_NO_UPDATE_CHECK1 to skip the startup check for a newer release.

Tools#

You can refer to servers by their id, or by name ("my survival server"). Each tool calls the REST API through the SDK, so anything a tool can't do yet is a few lines of code away.

Look and diagnose:

  • list_servers: state, address and RAM use.
  • get_server: details for one server.
  • get_console: recent console lines.
  • diagnose_server: runs the "Fix my server" checks.
  • list_players.

Control:

  • power_server: start, stop, restart or kill.
  • send_command.
  • player_action: kick, ban, unban or broadcast.
  • reinstall_server.

Files:

  • list_files.
  • read_file: pages through long files.
  • write_file.
  • rename_file.
  • delete_files.

Backups:

  • list_backups.
  • create_backup.
  • restore_backup.
  • delete_backup.

Configuration:

  • get_startup and set_startup_variable.
  • get_game_settings and update_game_settings.
  • get_game_versions and set_game_version.

Mods:

  • search_addons.
  • list_installed_addons.
  • install_addon and uninstall_addon.
  • search_modpacks and install_modpack.

Schedules:

  • list_schedules.
  • create_schedule.
  • delete_schedule.

Account:

  • get_plans_and_prices: games, plan sizes and regional prices.
  • list_orders.

Safety#

  • Tools that change something are marked for your client. Destructive ones are marked destructiveHint, so clients ask before running them: power kill, restore, deleting files, backups or schedules, reinstall, version switch, modpack install and file overwrite.
  • HOSTWOLF_READONLY=1 (or ?readonly=1 on the hosted URL) removes every tool that writes.
  • HOSTWOLF_SERVERS (or ?servers=) limits the assistant to specific servers.
  • The hosted server checks your key with the panel, keeps nothing between requests and never logs keys or tool arguments. It is rate limited per address and per key.
  • API keys can't order, cancel or pay for servers. Those actions only work in the web panel.
  • You can create a separate key just for your assistant, and revoke it at any time from the panel.

Updating#

The hosted server is always up to date. For the self-run one, npx caches the server by its URL, so it never updates by itself. Every release has its own URL, and the server checks game.hostwolf.net/dl/index.json when it starts. If a newer release exists, it logs a notice and adds it to the list_servers result, so your assistant tells you. To update, change the version in your config's URL and restart your client.

Built on the SDK#

The tools use @hostwolf/sdk, which is bundled inside this package. To embed the server in your own app, install both packages:

npm install https://game.hostwolf.net/dl/hostwolf-sdk-0.1.6.tgz https://game.hostwolf.net/dl/hostwolf-mcp-0.1.6.tgz
import { Hostwolf } from '@hostwolf/sdk';
import { createHostwolfMcp } from '@hostwolf/mcp/server';
